Desktop pets for Mac: the best ones in 2026

A desktop pet is a small animated character that lives on your screen. Some are pure mischief; some quietly help.

The main ones for Mac

• Spritefolk: pixel characters that each do one job. Batti the focus timer (free), Mira the breathing guide, Pump the Claude and Codex usage meter, Dhiru who watches your dev servers, Snake who turns your desktop into a game, and more. Up to three on screen at once; native, signed and notarized.
• Desktop Goose: a free, famously naughty goose that wanders your screen, tracks mud and drags your cursor around. Download it only from its developer's itch.io page.
• RunCat: a free cat in your menu bar who runs faster the busier your CPU gets.

What to check before installing

• It's signed and notarized, so macOS doesn't warn you on first open.
• It sleeps when hidden, so it doesn't drain your battery.
• You can hide it or quit it in one click when you need the screen.
